The Mosaic Road

The Project

The Mosaic Road is a participatory project run in partnership by artists based at The Old Print Works in Balsall Heath, a multicultural, creative inner-city area just south of central Birmingham, and funded by Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Birmingham City Council.

Over the summer months, we’re holding pop-up community photographic portrait shoots. Local residents are invited to have a professional portrait made – with a free print to take away – and contribute audio interviews relating to their experience of life in Balsall Heath and their ties to other places in the world. They will also have the opportunity to share their own family photos.

Five of the newly commissioned portraits will be transformed into beautiful mosaic tiled artworks, co-created by the community. These will go on public display at sites on and around Moseley Road. The images and stories we collect will be presented on this website to form an archive of Balsall Heath at this time in history and exhibited at The Old Print Works.
